2013
This article studies the myth of Icarus as it is translated in the first part of Alfonso X's General estoria. Its analysis highlights aspects that are usually found in the mythographical episodes of the Alfonsine estoria, particularly linked with its possible sources and its internal characteristics. The latter ones are defined by the anonymity of the quote and an evident moral intention. Regarding the sources, if it is known that the mythography gets to the Alfonsine text through two paths, the gloss in the manuscripts and a mythographical work, the exact source or sources used by Alfonsine historians are still unidentified. I have begun searching where the elements that are found in no pr…
The paper examines a specific problem in the controversial Dialogus de oratoribus: the issue of the great lacuna between chapters 35 and 36. The author of the article pla…
Lucretius Franco-Hibernicus: Dicuil’s Liber de Astronomia and the Carolingian Reception of De Rerum Natura
2020
Abstract Since its coinage in the nineteenth century, the concept of Carolingian renaissance has been primarily based on the revival of classical texts promoted by Charlemagne and his successors. Among the positive consequences of Carolingian classicism is the careful—if discreet—preservation of the text of Lucretius’s De Rerum Natura, which survives in three valuable ninth-century manuscripts. Whereas rigorous philological studies of these manuscripts have been offered, little attention has been paid to their role in, and connection with, the reception of Lucretius in ninth-century literature. It has been generally assumed that for the Carolingians the DRN was essentially a source for gram…
Generare in comune.
"Tea for two": the Archive of the Italian Latinity of the Middle Ages meets the CLARIN infrastructure
2020
This paper aims at showing how integrating the Archive of the Italian Latinity of the Middle Ages (ALIM) into the ILC4CLARIN repository can provide mutual benefits. Making ALIM available to a large community of scholars and researchers, on the one side, represents the first step to reduce the lack of resources for Medieval Latin in CLARIN and, on the other side, constitutes an unprecedented contribution to not only linguistic investigations, but also to the studies of the culture and science at the basis of the Western European society. The paper describes the adopted approach aiming to keep intact the structure of the archive and its metadata, which are both accurately mirrored into the IL…
Pragmatics of fraus: Encoding and Decoding of Deceit in Seneca’s Troades and Thyestes
2020
The paper aims at exploring the most relevant strategies of encoding and decoding of fraus and simulatio in Seneca’s tragedies, especially in Troades and Thyestes, from both a pragmatic and a dramaturgical point of view. In this perspective, it also provides a working definition of fraus, having regard to the Roman cultural categories involved in the communication dynamics portrayed by Seneca.

A sustainable work flow for a multi-layer edition of the Chronicon by Romualdus Salernitanus
2018
My experimental scholarly digital edition of the De nomine by Ursus Beneventanus tested the feasibility of the edition model theorized by Orlandi 2010, based on three different layers of text representation (graphematic, alphabetic and linguistic) and on a table of all graphemes having distinctive value in the graphic system of a specific manuscript (“graphematic table of signs”). Its work flow, however, proved to be very time-consuming. This talk analyzes the specific practices of the Ursus edition that mostly slowed down the work flow and outlines possible solutions to be applied in my ongoing digital edition of the Chronicon by Romualdus Salernitanus. Those aspects include (a) the markup…
